Teaching & Consulting

My father taught me some basics of photography when I was in high school. From there, I studied painting and printmaking at Columbia University in the City of New York, but have returned exclusively to camera work. I spent some years after college working in commercial photography, as a photo assistant, and master printer. My photographic work has been widely exhibited and collected.

In addition to my photographic work, I spent over 22 years building marketing web sites for large pharmaceutical corporations, starting as a developer, and working my way up to manager of web development and technologies where I collaborated with clients and engineers as a solutions architect. My background has given me broad grasp of art, digital art, technology, and marketing. If you would like me to help consult on a project, please reach out to me and we will discuss the possibilities.

Classes/Individual Instruction

If anyone is interested in taking a class with me, I have curriculums for a beginners class, and a street-photography class. Classes are usually split into easy sessions. I prefer small groups of no more than 5 at a time or working with a student on a 1-to-1 basis. If there are special topics that you would like to learn, I might be able to help out. Please contact me with any questions.

For the beginners class, there will be 2 online sessions. In the first, I will introduce some basic concepts, answer questions, and assign some (3 or 4) exercises. The second session will be a review of the exercises. The initial discussion will cover:
— exposure
— shutter speed
— f-stop (aperture)
— ISO (sensitivity)
— white balance
— composition ideas
The exercises will involve trying out shutter priority and aperture priority exposures, thinking about focus/depth of field, stop motion, and using some of the composition ideas that I cover.

The street photography would be broken up into 2 sessions, one session would be an online discussion, followed by a field trip to actually shoot some photos. The discussion session would include:
— an intro to some photography terms and ideas
— what is street photography
— a discussion of street photography and the law
— some masters of street photography
The second session would be a meet-up somewhere in New York City (Manhattan or Brooklyn), where you can start being a street photographer. This can be adapted for anyone that would prefer to work one-to-one.
